VLAN Setup -> RBK852

Hi there,

I've just bought the new Orbi Mesh Wifi RBK852 with the RBR and RBS 850 devices. I'm trying to setup a VLAN for my home VOip and TV services provided by my local ISP. The idea is setup the Orbi behind a firewall acting as the main DHCP wifi router.

Playing around with these devices, the Firewall accepts VLAN configuration but I'll delay its installation due to VPN needs. Meanwhile, ORbi comes in first. By having this in mind, will I get these VLAN services setup successfully in RBR850? Should I perform any additional thing?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Eddie

  • This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

    Couple of options,
    1. Configure the firewalls DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the firewall.
    3. Or configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://kb.netgear.com/31218/How-do-I-configure-my-Orbi-router-to-act-as-an-access-point and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7LOcJ8GdDo&app=desktop

      Hey there,

      Appreciate your tips...

      The Firewall I'm using is a 6-Port Protectil device with pfSense running on it. I have 300MB Internet connection from my ISP through its cable modem. I'll turn off their wifi bands, and NAT as well. Plug off the WAN cable and plug into WAN port of the Firewall. I'll connect ORbi in the LAN port of the Firewall. NAT runs only on FW. Wifi bands will be served from the Mesh devices. What I don't and need to verify is the VLAN settings for both TV and VOIP, which it will be disabled in Cable Modem's ISP when I turn of the WAN signal.

      I'm a bit concern if these services will work after this setup and I haven't found anything related to VOIP and VLANs in ORbi Mesh infra. :-) What do you think?

      Thanks buddy.

        SOmenthing to check with your ISP to see what kind of configuration is needed for TV and VIOP.

        FW still has NAT so you may want to configure AP Mode on the Orbi system.
