Consistent Internet drops
Hi - I recently purchased the Orbi 870 series (router plus 3 satellites) and I currently have 2 satellites hard wired to the 871 router and 1 satellite connected wireless. On a regular basis my inte...

Hey Furrye38 -
The LED has changed to pink for some of these issues, but oftentimes there is no LED indicator at all and the issue still manifests. I will check the logs during the next incident and share them here. I have looked at the WAN ports uptime and it appears that this is an Orbi issue and not a WAN issue.
- I'll get the modem info tomorrow and share it
- LAN cables are made and tested by me so I can confirm they are good. I'll double check, but pretty sure i'm using Cat6 although will confirm if it is CAT6A STP
- ISP detected
- Home size is ~5000 sq ft
- distance between all is 30 feet or more
- i've been unable to connect or do anything on the router so thinking it happens whether on or off
- ethernet is connected directly to router
- will get the CAT# tomorrow as well
- Yes, I followed the instructions provided to do the wireless sync before connecting via ethernet cable
For wireless, 2.4 and 5 ghz are both set to auto.

OK if PINK is being seen at the RBR on some of these issues, means the RBR isn't getting good internet services from the modem or ISP services. Can also be LAN cable caused. Seen these odd issues with CAT6 UTP cabling here and there, even though they are good cables. Higher speed connection rates can be problematic here and there. Why I switched to CAT6A STP cabling years ago. Haven't seen these odd ones since.
Also try some custom DNS like Cloudfare or Quad9. Been known issues crop up with ISP detected DNS here and there.
Try some manual channels as well for WiFI on the RBR. 1 and 40 or 11 and 48.

Ok, I have two different types of cable being used currently because I had a line pulled all the way to my barn so one of my satellite units is out there. Here are the two types:
- (outside, pulled to barn) TRUE CABLE Cat6 Direct Burial Bulk Ethernet, Gel Filled, Unshielded, 500ft, Black, Outdoor OSP Jacket, Waterproof, UV Resistant, 23AWG Solid Bare Copper, 550MHz, PoE++ (4PPoE)
- (inside) UTP Cat 6
I also checked the modem that my orbi is connected to and it is:
- Adtran - I'm not sure what the model number is because the picture i took of the back of the device doesn't really call it out, but I think its SDX632v
I just changed my wifi channels to 11 and 48 to see if that makes it more consistent and stable. I'll look into the cat6a stp, but honestly i'm not in a position to change out the cable that was pulled to the barn (buried and prob a little over 100 feet). For the custom DNS, I have never done something like that. Would I just go to the DNS settings and use a custom DNS Server?
Really appreciate the help!

Ok so for CAT6 UTP cabling, limits are just around 300 feet. Also for higher connection rates past 1G, you could see more degredation at higher speeds between the RBR and RBS. Why STP, Shielded, to help with this. Are you seeing any issues with the barn RBS currently?
If you have a SDX632v, i believe it supports ethernet connections up to 10Gb. Something I would get a CAT6A STP in between the ONT and RBR.
Yes, can be set on the RBRs web page under Setup/Internet setup. Can change it at any time.

I am definitely within the 300 foot limit of the CAT6, but I'll plan to update my cable to the STP in the near future. I am ordering the cat6A STP between the modem and router now and I did end up setting the different DNS like you suggested. I'm still noticing the issues, but it seems to be slightly less often. I'm going to get the cable changed between the modem/router and then let it settle for a few days to see if that helps.
I'll follow up here again once I have more information. Unfortunately the logs are just not providing helpful information when it comes to the drops. Any insights into what I should be looking for there?

Just to circle back to this - the max distance spec for any ethernet connection is 100 meters (~300 feet). Even with Cat 8 cable. So you are definitely exceeding the spec'd distance here (and upgrading to STP won't change that). I'm not saying it won't work - it possibly will. But you are in uncharted territory.
One question here is whether you need multigig at the barn. Solutions are potentially cheaper if you are ok with a gigabit backhaul on that connection.
There are some ethernet range extenders you could try (needing a pair of extenders - one at each end of the current cable).
More expensive options are to switch to fiber or Coax (perhaps MoCA 2.5 adapters).
