Netgear Orbi 870 slow to stream from NVME SSD NAS
Hi Friends. I am a Netgear Orbi Newbie. I have just recently bought the 3 pack Orbi 870. I live in Perth, Australia. I upgraded from a much older system that did not allow me to stream 4K video from...

QNAP MODel - TBS h574TX - connected via ethernet to my netgear ORBI 870 WIFI router.
The NETGEAR ORBI 870 is in turn connected via ethernet port to my TPG (Provider) TPLINK modem which is connected via Telephone line to the wall in my home.
Here is a blackmagic speed test (running on my macbook pro M3 Pro ) trying to copy/read 2GB onto the NVME SSD in the QNAP TBS H574Tx NAS. . My Macbook Pro M3 Pro chip is connected via WIFI to one of the ORBi satellites. I am trying to stream 4K video from the QNAP NAS about 20GB video to VLC on my Macbook and its lagging.
- what are you using for streaming from the qnap? Like StephenB says, plex? Jellyfin? DLNA? - Just VLC
- what qnap is it (model)? TBSh574TX
- Are you streaming wireless? Wired? Streaming wirelessly to this macbook pro but also to Apple TVs aroudn the house. i dont have any wired connections across all my peripehrals.
- What are you streaming to? fire tv? google tv? apple tv? (and the model) 4 Apple TVs alone + 3 other macbooks
- what actual speeds do you get? Have a look at the blackmagic image above. Also, when i do speedtest.net on the Apple TV s around the house, the speeds varry between 20mbps to 50mbps to connect to internet.
- are you using software transcoding? hardware transcoding? Dont know
- What makes you think its a speed issue if the old system and orbi system both have issues. The old system was slow, and i could not stream big video files /high quality without lag...so i upgraded to the Netgear 870s to hopefully correct this problem

The ~100 MB/s speed you are seeing here is the max you can get over gigabit ethernet. So the the issue is not the QNAP and it is not the network connections between the QNAP and the macbook pro.
Do you see the problem when running VLC on the M3 Pro?

Is the issue happening with the TVs? Or only with the macbooks?
Also, is it happening with all the macbooks or only some?
Can you run the blackmagic test on the macbooks with the problem?

There is no transcoding if you are going to the video on the QNAP and then playing it from there. But this could still be a decoding speed problem on the macbooks, especially if VLC is decoding in software.
Can you check whether VLC is set up to use hardware acceleration (or not)?
