New Orbi 772 Router Setup

I am planning to replace my old Apple Airport Time capsule with the new Orbi 772 mesh router. I have a couple of questions before I begin:

1. Since I have quite a few Apple products that will need network access do I need to do anything special for Apple products?  A lot of the information I'm seeing relates more to PC type products.

2. Has anyone that has replaced their Apple Airport Time Capsule been able to use the Time Capsule as a stand alone HD?

Thanks for any insights you might have.

  • When I updated from my Apple TC to Orbi Mesh I rebuilt the TC as WiFi client and still ran Time Machine for backing up my Mac. I'm surprised yours is still working as my TC network became quite flakey with modern WiFi client and needed regular reboots, although this may have been down to the Airport Xpress units acting as "satellites" although really just range extenders. Hence why I deployed an Orbi mesh. Once TC was no longer a router and base station it reliably worked as a pure TC NAS until the PSU capacitors all died. There's a few articles on how to change those. I rely on iCloud back now for Apple clients.

Hopefully you'll notice a big improvement in throughput across your WiFi.

  • Not sure about question 2 but question 1 is that pretty much all your devices should connect fine.

I usually just swap ssids so all the devices auto-reconnect

Thank you for your response jeffgear.  I have now transitioned my TC to serve as just a NAS.  The Orbi 772 with satellite setup seems to be working flawlessly with much improved throughput. The only hiccup has been one Amazon Echo Dot that just won't connect to the network.  Still working on that one.  I appreciate you sharing your experience with your TCs.
