Orbi 772 slowing ALL my devices to less than 200mbps
Hello everyone.
I have my Orbi 772 system installed since last week, and the experience is being horrible for my 4th Orbi. By far the worse.
As a starter, there is anything I can do to fix my 5ghz channel selection. After any reboot it comes back to channel 40. This is not happening for my 2.4ghz selection.
When we talk about the app or web management, the device list and connections doesn’t refresh at all. I made a very simple test and turned off my satellite, but it still shows the satellite as on and the devices previously(?) attached as connected through the satellite.
Those are not even close of how annoying is the next bug. Turns out that ALL my devices can’t go after 200mbps of download speed (my internet is 700mbps and delivers it through router Speedtest). Sometimes I can bypass it by turning off and on the WiFi on the device, but it doesn’t work all the time.
I am running the latest firmware, which by its release notes says that a bug in the 2.4ghz network dropping was fixed, but it looks like the router can’t switch bands for the devices, and keep them all stuck as 2.4ghz. Of course 200mbps is only being achieved because I’ve turned off 2.4ghz coexistence and speeds go up a little. I don’t have disconnections anymore, just very slow speeds.
Here's the device list I’ve tested:
- iPhone 16 Pro Max (iOS 18.3) - WiFi 7
- iPhone 15 Pro Max (iOS 18.3) - WiFi 6e
- iPhone SE 2nd Gen (iOS 18.3) - WiFi 6
- iPad Pro M4 (iOS 18.3) - WiFi 6e
- iPad Pro M1 (iOS 18.3) - WiFi 6
- MacBook Air M2 (macOS 15.3) - WiFi 6
- Dell Latitude 7450 (windows 11 23H2) - WiFi 7
- Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5g - Latest Android
Already tried:
- Firmware update/reinstall
- Factory reset
- Keep factory settings
- ALL channels available for 5ghz
- All the devices above
- Router and satellite restart
- Only router on
As it intermittently works by turning device's WiFi off and on, and different platforms (windows, iOS, macOS, Android), to me it looks like a bad firmware.
Any guesses?
Hi plemans!
First of all thanks for your reply!
I am glad to share that I figured out what happened, but will first answer your questions.
1.I know you said you're on the latest firmware, but what actual version do you have?
- V10.5.13.1_2.2.34
2. what modem/gateway is it connected to?
- It is connected to an Askey modem (I’m in Brazil)
3. you won't hit faster than 200mbps over 2.4ghz. I'm impressed if you're actually getting that. the 5ghz yes.
- Actually I was at 6ghz, my mistake.4. Might try reinstalling the firmware (in case its corrupt), factory resetting (I know you already did), and then reinstalling fresh and not from a backup (in case something in settings is corrupt).
- Tried, didn’t worked out
5. Try testing the speeds without the satellites connected.
- Same results
6. Is ipv6 enabled?
- BINGO! Will better explain below!
7. what app/speedtest are you using and whats hosting it?
- Netflix “fast.com”
8. what hardwired speeds do you get?
- Same 200mbps
As it turns out and long story short, my problem was related to IPv6!
I was really convinced that it was related to Double NAT, because when I put the modem in bridge mode it solves all issues. However, leave it in bridge mode is not an option as it disables my cable decoders. I called my ISP/cable provider and made them replace the modem, and I even changed some advanced configurations to try to have the internet in bridge and keep the tv working, but I have lost all interactive options for the TV.
Then I decided to turn on my 963 and check all options in every single menu, and I found out that Netgear started to ship the new devices with IPv6 on by default and on pass through mode. This was making the Orbi device correctly assign the IPv4 address, but acquiring the IPv6 address from the modem as its router. When I’ve turned off the IPv6 all started to work flawless like magic.
My final message to Netgear in this case is to better disable it again on next firmware update by default, and if someone needs IPv6 they can enable it by themselves.
Thank you for the ideas and support, plemans!

Another thing you can try if you're leaving your gateway as a router is the orbi in access point mode. it disables some functions but leaves the gateway managing all the router functions and the orbi just acting as an access point. That'd help with the double nat too.
