Orbi 970 Not Passing Through 10GB Speed

Hi there,

I am writing in regards to my new Orbi 970 system. I'm setup with GFiber 8GB package and can confirm that the Orbi is receiving nearly full-bandwidth at about 7800 up + down, which is fantastic. However, the speed that I'm reading out of the 10GB Ethernet port is maxing out at 800. Are there any settings within the Orbi app that I need to enable to allow the 10GB Ethernet port to pass through the full bandwidth?

To ensure I'm not bottlenecking with my test laptop, I've purchased an OWC TB box capable of 10GB speed. But I'm currently using a Belkin Ethernet to USB-C on my Macbook Pro 16" M1.

Any ideas or known issues with the 10GB Ethernet port on the 970?

Thanks, all.

  • How are you speed testing? RBR internal speed test app?

I would use Ooklas installable speed test app on a PC or your Mac to test with.

What model is this Belkin USB C adapter?

Do you get near 8Gb with the Mac directly connected to the ISP ONT?

Is Armor, IPv6, SPC or Traffic Meter enabled?

I was speed testing the GFiber to the modem through the Orbi app, which is where I was seeing the full bandwidth (or as close as possible). Speed testing the Mac through Speedtest.net via Google Chrome, good tip about the installable app, I will check that out.

The model of the Belkin is Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet supporting 10/100/1000BASE-T, but even as I'm writing this I'm seeing that may be the issue - that probably only maxes out at 1GB.

Will double check the Armor, IPv6, SPC or Traffic Meter settings, can't confirm just yet but likely no since I disabled Armor, not sure about IPv6, SPC, or Traffic Meter.

      Thank you for the reply.

Please log into your router admin page via the WebUI (usually through 192.168.1.1) and click on the "Advanced" Tab, and then on the boxes to the right side, find "Internet Port" and click on "Show Statistics".

You'll get a new window that shows WAN, LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 etc  showing connection status and speed to your various ports.   If you are connecting your MAC via the OWC connected to the 10GB port, then check the connection speed to LAN1  and see if it reports 10Gbps or something else.   If it is showing 10Gbps, then the port and the device has  successfully negotiated the 10Gbps speed.  If it is something else, then it may be the port, but it also may be the cable or a setting on the device connected to that port.  (Please cut/paste that info into a reply so we can see what it is negotiating).

Additionally, you say that you are connecting your MAC to the OWC via a Belkin Ethernet to USB-C adapter.  I have not found any Belkin Ethernet to USB-C adapter that supports 10Gbps  -  2.5Gbps  and 1Gbps, but not 10Gbps.  Even if the port itself can support 10Gbps - if you are connecting a 1Gbps device to a 10Gbps port - you are only going to get a maximum of 1 Gbps  (and could be less depending on overhead and specifically, some chipsets.

Please provide the actual model number of the Belkin adapter as well as the OWC if you would and that could help us better determine what the cause MAY be -   along with the information show in the "Show Statistics" page noted above.

  • Any progress on this?
