Possible Fix for iPhone Dropping WiFi
I have an RBE973S system. think I have identified the reason my iPhone keeps dropping WiFi, and I wanted to share so others can see if it solves their issues. On your iPhone, go to Settings>Cellula...

Yeah it's probably happening as much as before. Settings says we have a WiFi connection, but unreality (top right corner), no we do not. Speed test confirms this phone is on Cellular.

donawalt, I’ve submitted our WiFi/cell flipping Support Case to NG, they are already at Level 3 Support. I might have missed this in your previous info, who is your Internet provider, and cell service provider? I have an angle I might be able to follow outside of NG Level 3 that could lead to a fix.

Roc1 that's great! Good luck, Have not had good luck with opening support tickets.
My ISP is Comcast, and my Cell Provider is AT&T. Let me know if you need more info!
- Roc1Aug 01, 2024LuminaryDonawalt, Oh, yes, I can open them tickets, I just can’t get any closed!!
Today, NG actually added this WiFi/Cell Stability issue to my NG Level 3 Support Case that’s been open for 3-months! NG has been diligently working with me but no solution yet.
What speed Comcast internet do you have? Is it fiber? Who makes the router/modem/ONT (if isp is fiber) for Comcast? My ATT is Internet and is 5Gb fiber.
Approximately what range up and download speeds do you get when you use the Orbi App via WiFi connection (actual iPhone connection band doesn’t matter when using Orbi app to do internal RBE971 speed test, but it is ok if you run internal speed test with 2.4/5/6Ghz WiFi) to RBE971 to run an internal Orbi speed test of Comcast internet speeds? I was hoping you also had ATT fiber internet.
I also spoke with Apple Care today, they have no issues on file related to iPhone 15 Promax Cell/wifi stability. BUT, the Apple rep shared with me her brother has an iPhone 15 pro max with ATT internet. She said he had stability issues with his Netgear router (she didn’t know the model) and her iPhone was doing the same cell/wifi/cell flipping when she visited her brother's house. Her brother interfaced with NG (she didn’t know if it was a call or a formal Case) and then contacted ATT who somehow used info from NG support (or vice versa) that her brother used to “tweak” RBE971 and ATT Gateway settings that corrected his cell/wifi stability issue. I'll call ATT tomorrow and see if I can get any suggestions from them that might help both of us.
The speed test I asked you to run are to see if your RBE has same upload speed issues as several of us RBE971 owners have been having since Feb ‘24. My internal Orbi download speeds are always 4700-4900Mb 100% of time. 95% of time (after hundreds of speed tests over 3-months working with NG) my upload speeds are 600-900Mb. 5% of time (there is no rhyme or reason when this 5% occurs), the internal upload speed is symmetrical with download, 4700-4900Mb!! Have you noticed anything like this? That’s what my 2-month old NG case (that’s where our Stability issue has been added since NG Level 3 Support is already working on that issue).- donawaltAug 01, 2024Mentor - Experienced User
OK, here is what I have, let me know if I missed anything you need Roc1 !
My Comcast Internet plan is 2GB/300MB - I have most of my rooms in the house wired with Cat 6 cable, and the devices that can hit 2GB run through a NG XS508M 10G router. So this is the most reliable speed test for me. I posted in the Orbi app awhile ago, for me the speeds from that app are just wrong - they must go to some server for me that can't handle the load or speed, but if you check this thread you'll see all the details of how the Orbi app speed test is just wrong, and how I tested it.
So anyway - my direct connect speeds are regularly 2250/350 - taking advantage of Comcast's over provisioning. It's not fiber to the house, it's just normal mid-split network connection. I have no speed issues, it's very consistent. My modem is a NG CM3000, and its error counts are very low and the logs are clean - it's a very cleaned up network around here (Baltimore city).
So I don't have speed issues, just the WiFi/cell flipping you encounter as well.
BTW, I do not have a 971 - I have an Orbi RBS 960 series, router and 2 satellites.
Let me know if you need more info!
- Roc1Aug 01, 2024LuminarySorry, I’m old and keep remembering additional info.
I think NG level two started to turn me back to Apple, but while I was on the phone with them for 2-hours, every time my iPhone 15promax flipped into or out of 5G cellular while sitting in same spot I announced it to NG Level 2! It must have happened 40 or more times!! That plus the info you had in your screen shot (same info which I’d also provided NG from my iPhone) showing Apple Settings with a WiFi SSID, AND 5G cellular connection on Home Screen convinced NG, it was a router issue. The WIFI Setting should show “No Connection” on WIFI Setting line when connected to cellular.
I also raised another issue I’ve noticed when NG Level 2 asked me what WiFi band was I connect to the router with.
I have wired backhaul from my Satellites. When I went to the Orbi 971 router to check “device connections”, it showed my iPhone was connected to Router via RJ45 (???). With wired backhaul from a satellite, it actually WAS connected to the router via RJ45, but the device list doesn’t include a WIFI band for devices hardwired to router (which my iPhone definitely was not), so I couldn’t confirm my iPhone was connected at 6Mhz band WiFi. I think this issue surprised Level 2, so I think this App issue is also included in our Case.
