Notice much difference using pfsense versus using the built in router features in the Orbi? I've got an old server that I'm looking at decommissioning and this might be a great time to play.

My God, yes. It is night and day. I can show different type of test results... probably one of the most easy to describe is bufferbloat went from a C+ to an A+ immediately with the traffic shaping option in pfSense.
I use some reverse proxy stuff (HAProxy) which is also facilitated under pfSense. It also is very surprising to see how many attacks a home network comes under each day -- that you just dont get an appreciation for using normal routers & router managment software. I look at pfSense as going to the big league. Night and day amounts of control, awareness , defense and reporting.
Just my opinion.
If you decide to do this, I can literally help you get up and running with pfSense and Orbi in 5 minutes. PiHole integration takes just a little longer. It's good stuff!

Definitely something I'll be looking into when its time. Right now I'm sitting pretty solid at an A for buffer bloat and have fast speeds throughout the home but there's always room for improvement 🙂
