Even in AC mode it won't just sit at 256 QAM, it will drop lower depending on signal quality as mentioned earlier. I suspect your issue isn't with the QAM switching.

Allow me to further add some context to the problem:

-The RAX120 I have is (I believe) a broadcom device

-I have AX disabled, and the rest of my setup uses AC only.

-However, there doesn't seem to be an option on the AP wireless settings page to specifically exclude 1024 QAM modulation- even at lower data rates, there is an option to use *up to 1024QAM*. (See attached image)

-When monitoring network traffic on an Intel card, I am able to see most packets up to MCS 9. However, the driver crashes occasionally with the error message:

       Rate marked as a VHT rate but data is invalid: MCS: 11, NSS: 2

which makes me suspect the router is transmitting at a higher than standard data rate than is specified in AC.

... which is why I would like to try and disable 1024 QAM to see if this problem resolves itself.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation, and maybe someone could point out if I'm missing anything along the way.
