I have the same setup, XB6 modem and AX12. I was not able to get bridge mode working either. The router never got a dynamic IP assignment. Comcast support even tried helping out. They were very helpful but after failing to get it to work, Comcast gave me an account credit.
However, I'm getting much better overall WiFi out of the Comcast XB6 than I am with the AX12. So I'm debating a return. I have both APs running now. Which I need for my 802.11ac clients to even get a stable connection.
We shouldn't have to stuggle so hard getting a $500 router to work! It should be amazing out of the box.

Sorry to here that. Have you actually used the AX12? To imply that the Xfinity gateways wi-fi is better without actually setting up your AX12 is a little bias. Well you could save over a hundred dollars a year by purchasing your own modem......
