I have no idea why, but I wanted to make sure that the laCie hard drive was indeed working before I went through the inexplicable joy of factory resetting the router. My Mac saw it and I was happy with that, I plugged it back into the router before I was about to do the factory reset and was amazed that the usb light on the router turned on. I then checked the network and lo and behold the drive was there.
no sure what that was all about, but I am happy it is over.
thanks.

sorry, it is a hard drive. the usb light for usb on the router does not turn on anymore, but the drive works fine if plugged into a computer. I even tried another hard drive in the usb3 slot to be sure. both work on my computer, neither turn the light for usb on the router. I have restarted the router twice (no factory reset)

One problem with USB storage is that it needs power. Routers can have a hard time delivering enough power. PCs
Does your drive have a separate power supply? Does it appear in Netgear's list of USB drives that work?

That is not complete and is not up to date.
The bottom line is that the router's USB is a poor man's network storage. Not something to take all that seriously.
You said that you aren't keen to reset the device. Unfortunately, that would be the first thing that Netgear would ask you to do. You can always save the settings before you try this. Then if nothing happens you can restore the settings.

this hard drive has its own power supply, so power is not an issue. its main use is for the older movies and television shows I have bought and/or ripped from my own copies over the years. the drive houses these shows and movies, as well as other stuff, and is accessible using the infuse app on Apple TV. it was a fantastic set up that is now not working.

People have reported that some devices overheat when the router's CPU is working overtime. Not sure if this device has suffered from that affliction.

well, the device is fine, I can plug it into my computer and see it no problem. I will try restarting the router this weekend.
