What is that new router?
Is this the Australian NBN network?
What connects to the router to the Internet?

What sort of Internet do you have?
NBN just means Australian Internet. It comes in different types. Cable? DSL? Optical? They all have different ways to connect.
Manuals are always a good place to start.

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
Begin with the Quick Start/Installation Guide.
There may also be some helpful videos on what to do.
You may have done that already. I can't tell from your message.
I mention it because Netgear gave up on supplying paper manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

But this usually delivers the Internet through an optical network termination (ONT). That then has a connection that you can run to the WAN (Internet) port on the router.
You say you have an Axe300. That isn't a Netgear router model. Look at the label on the bottom of the thing.
Do you mean RAXE300?
I spoke to an tech and he said i needed my pppoe user name which i now have, i put it in put that didnt end up solving my issueYou should reset the router and then try the manual setup. Again, see what the manual says.
The pppoe username may just be a part of the details you need. That is down to how the ISP operates.
