configuring different Netager router/extenders in one network (RAX200, R8000, EAX80)

I saw different posts on using different Netgear routers and extenders in one home network. I tried different settings but can't get a kind of roaming state of my network. My main router is a RAX200 and configured a R8000 and EAX80 as AP. I am using same SSID and passwords but my devices (Windows, Apple and Android) keep connected to a certain router/AP and need to manally change the Wifi network to get the best signal. I used Smart Connect but sadly coverage of Wifi seams worse . Any suggestions?

CHEERS !!

  • Wowsa thats quite a few impressive devices.

    good news or bad?

Good? Thats a super capable network.

Bad: in AP mode it won't roam as efficiently as a mesh network. Its why we usually push people towards a mesh network if they're using consumer equipment for router and multiple AP's.

Reason why is in AP mode, the EAX80 and the R8000's smart roaming features get disabled. The EAX's stays enabled if its in extender mode.

Most devices (phone, tablet) have their own roaming protocols built into them but without the smart roaming features enabled, devices tend to be "stickier" and stay connected to their initial devices.

A couple things you can try.

depending on the size of your home, you can actually reduce the broadcast strength of the router/ap's. If the signal is to strong, devices won't roam because they'll still have a good enough signal to operate.

Also, make sure that the router/ap's are on different channels from 2.4ghz and 5ghz to prevent interference. It might even be worth it on the Rax200 to set its 5ghz from 4800mbps to 2400mbps so it runs in 80hz operate to limit its interference.

    How big is your home?

Not necessarily the best approach. Even with the same SSID and passwords wifi clients will have to switch between different wifi sources. By having the same login details you are simply confusing things.

Capable devices will spot that there is a better network nearby and will negotiate a new connection.

    Worth trying.
