Connecting cables for new router
I currently have a Nighthawk AC1900 router (D7000v2) that has a DSL (rj11) cable plugged in to the back, I'm looking at getting a Nighthawk AX5 RAX42, this does not have the connection for a DSL cabl...

You can use the D7000v2 as a modem in front of a RAX42. If, that is, you are on the same DSL service.

For various reasons, modem only is a better option than modem/router but DSL modem only devices are hard to get these days. Netgear stopped making them some time ago.
Hi, thanks for the great idea. I do have a question before I buy the RX42. You say to use the DSL router as a modem only, After setting it up as a modem, would I be able to use the AP feature within the settings? the whole reason behind me asking is the original question is because I would like to extent my wifi range. I would have the RX42 at one end of my house with the AC1900 the other.

Do you mean you want to use the D7000v2 as an AP?
In modem only mode, there is no wifi from the D7000v2.
An alternative is to use the RAX42 in AP mode.
That needs a wired connection between the D7000v2 and the RAX42.
There are ways to use the D7000v2 as a modem/router with the RAX42 as a second router.But they are a bit complicated. I have a similar arrangement with a BT modem/router in front of an MR90 router.
A better setup might be to forget about the RAX42 and to go for a Mesh router, something in the Orbi or MK range with an extra satellite or two to spread the wifi. That would give a much more manageable and reliable wifi network than trying to get two independent wifi networks to play nicely together.

I currently have a D7000v2 in the middle of my home with a vodafone modem router at the end of my home to extend the wifi (the house is hardwired to most rooms from the office). The router is hardwired and configured to the same wifi to extend it. (no AP mode, just what I found online to extend range)
The end of the house with the Vodafone router, the wifi drops in and out and very unstable and I'm forever logging back into the wifi on my phone.
I think I will go for the alternate method you suggested and use the RAX42 in AP mode or see if I can buy another D7000 and use that in AP mode. I hope that will improve over the currant set up I have. I'm happy to give that a go over buying a mesh system. (hey at least I might learn something).
