The receiver is connected via ethernet cable to my Netgear router and the WIFI function on the router is always in the off position. This is truly a mystery.
A mystery indeed. Which router is this? What modem/gateway connects it to the Internet? Does that do wifi?

Chat GPT has the following sollution: "If both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are indeed turned off and there is no Ethernet connection, the iPhone should typically be unable to communicate with the stereo receiver. However, if you find that your iPhone can still control or stream to the stereo receiver, it's possible that there are shadow network settings at play, such as "WLAN Assist" or other hidden features on the device. You'd want to double-check those settings and perhaps even perform a soft reset of the phone if you suspect some kind of connectivity glitch."
How can I check the WLAN Assist or other hidden features?

that'd be on your receiver and/or the phone. Not the router.
And from what you said, they manufacturers don't think it'd work either.

I'm just trying to find out how it's been working for the last 2 years, why it stopped working and what can be done to get it working again.

OK. We can rule that out then.
I did wonder about some sort of phone app, but you seem to have ruled that out too.
Magic.
