Well. I have been using Netgear products for a VERY long time. I think I still have an old 814 somewhere, but at this rate since this is obviously a software limitation that they know about and haven't fixed, I may have to investigate other routers. Quite possibly the ASUS, since they are committed to gaming which means high speed products. Any thoughts?

I cheated. They (netgear) make great hardware (tends to always rank fairly high in performance testing). They just tend to be a bit behind on firmware/software.
So I built my own router running opnsense and just use the netgear in AP mode.
It rocks. Much better performance, has dns blocking, and a ton of other options I've been learning.
Was pretty cheap. I used a minipc with dual 2.5g nic's. I wish i'd have invested a touch more and went 10g but my internet is only 2gig so it works.
And it normally draws 6W of power.
Wifi is super fast, I have faster dns resolution, and it rocks. I actually have 2 homes wired to it (through a 10g switch) and have zero issues supporting 200+ devices. I'm running each home on a vlan with traffic shaping.
I know prices have went up but I picked mine up fro $150 from a jungle site with an intel N150 and 12gb of ram.
If I was to do it again, I'd find a couple of generations older office pc (small form factor), have 10g cards in it, and then run something like proxmox/opnsense.
Next time. Or I'll end up going a full server option to combine some of my home serve stuff into one device.
It sounds complicated but it isn't if you're just doing a baremetal opnsense box. There's a ton of guides on setup/use. And I've even used AI for help when I ran into issues with the vlans.
