Is AX1800 a good upgrade for N750?
Hello! I have the opportunity to get a free AX1800 from work as a holiday gift. There are other gift options, but this is the only router available. I’m wondering if it’s worth considering as an upgrade to our current system, or if it’s more of a sidegrade. I’m having a hard time understanding the differences and comparing an older router to a newer one that’s a different model type.
Our internet service is AT&T gigabit fiber, and the setup is a little complicated. The AT&T gateway is in the garage. There’s also a box on the wall in the garage with Ethernet ports that connect to all the rooms, so we have the AT&T gateway sending Ethernet connections into the house that way. We have an N750 plugged into the home office Ethernet port that generally works ok, but the signal is weak in the bedrooms. It’s a single story house that’s not particularly large (2000 square feet), but there are a lot of walls in the way. Could the AX1800 give us a stronger signal? In addition, the N750 seems to struggle with the large number of connected devices our family has (multiple computers/tablets, 2 smartphones, several smart TVs using streaming services, Alexa devices, smart plugs, etc.). Smart plugs and Amazon devices stop responding frequently, streaming becomes impossible, etc. Would the AX1800 be better for a connected home in that sense?
We would also be open to suggestions of better options for an upgrade, but my primary decision right now is: do I take the AX1800 as a gift or go for a different gift?

Yes, would certainly bet well worth it. Is this a router? AX1800 is a wifi speed. There maybe a model# like EAX or RAX####.
- jstarfirebAspirantThank you! Funny, I thought ax1800 was the model number. It’s the 4 stream Wi-Fi 6 router. Looks like RAX10. https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/routers/rax10/
Ok, ya the RAX10 beats the older model.
If you have a built in wifi router at the modem, This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. This would be a double NAT condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT

Couple of options,
1. Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the NG router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
2. If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the NG router gets from the modem. https://kb.netgear.com/25891/DMZ-on-NETGEAR-routers

3. Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the NG router to the modem, LAN to LAN configure AP mode on the NG router.

Anything from the AX generation is going to be quite a big improvement from an N750 device. Some of the N750's weren't even gigabit (tough to know without a model number).
but you should see a nice speed improvement, a little better coverage, and better concurrent usage in comparison to your old device.

The AX1800 is a good upgrade for the N750 if you are looking for better performance and features. The AX1800 is a more powerful router with better range, speed, and security features. It also includes support for the latest wireless standards, which the N750 does not.
