I agree.

Were they right? Or are you having some kind of problem?
"plug it in" to what? Note that a typical router does not have a
plug which you could "plug in" to anything; it has multiple Ethernet
ports, not all equivalent, which could be connected to other Ethernet
ports, using a suitable Ethernet cable.

The same could be said about many other, different devices, too. Has
your (unspecified) "a Netgear Nighthawk" a model number? Look for
"Model" on the prduct label.
With that datum in hand, you might try this radical concept:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTFM
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation. Get some. Read.

How much do you expect the non-psychics in your audience to know
about any of these things? Or what you did? Or what happened when you
did it? Or the actual subject of your complaint?
None of that is a useful problem description. It does not say what
you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.
