Readyshare is set up on the router
The USB light does come on when the My Passport is connected, and the internet connection goes solid blue and there is no internet connection.
Modem is a Arris Surfboard Docis 3

Your first move should be to update the firmware to the latest version:

That could be one of a number of devices. Most of them are simple modems, but that description could also cover a few modem/routers.
I can't see why adding a USB drive should shut out the Internet, beyond the possibility that the drive is draining too much current from the USB port on the RAX50v2.
Which WD My Passport hard drive is this? One with its own power? How big is it?
Does the same thing happen with other USB storage?
