New AX6 RAX45 Buzzing/Humming/Coil Whine

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is safe and healthy. I just picked up an RAX45 AX6 from Costco (6 Stream Costco Version) and I'm loving the range and still tweaking a few settings, but I noticed that there is coil whine/buzzing/humming/static noise coming from the unit when there is WiFi activity. I've heard of this issue with R7000's back in the day, but I haven't owned a Netgear router in a while. My Asus AC68u that I came from was absolutely silent during wireless transmissions.

Just wondering if other users of these AX routers have noticed this sound? I know that some coil whine is present in a lot of electronics (for instance my video card whines a bit at certain loads), but I've never heard a router with it until now. Just wanting to weigh out the chances of getting one that's silent if I return this one at Costco.

Thanks for any input in advance guys and girls!

  • I've got several AX routers and none of them make a hum or noise (other than a fan spinning up or running)

If its fanless or the fan isn't moving, I'd exchange it while you're still in the exchange period.

Thanks for your reply Plemans. I don't believe it's a fan, even though supports says it could be. I don't think the AX6 model has a fan and it definitely sounds like coil whine. I know some people can't even hear sounds like this, but I seem to be extra sensitive to it (lucky me). I could easily go swap it at Costco, so I might just go ahead and do that while I'm still within their return period.

I was somewhat hoping someone would say that it's totally normal and to live with it...lol

It might be totally normal and you just pick up on sounds other don't. But it sticks to be 2-3 months in and have it go bad and have to go through the rma process.

I've done it. Much easier to just swap/exchange when you're within a return period.
