2.4 GHz is considerably slower than 5 GHz, but has better range. Put your slow devices on it and the fast ones on 5 GHz.
Smart Connect changes internals so you'll have to reconfigure/reconnect your gizmoz again. I have IoT devices myself and they work with SC when I set them up again.
Could be the phone or something else. Hard to tell.
