Nighthawk Router with WiFi 6

I have no Tech expirience or knowledge.  I have a U-verse router that works ok.  Sorry for my ignorance.  Can I replace that router for a top of the line Netgear Router like a Nighthawk Router with WiFi-6?

    Is the existing router a simple router? Or is it also a modem?

     

    You can replace a router with another router. But replacing a modem/router needs either another modem/router or, more versatile and reliable, a new modem and a new router.
