Which one? AX4200 is not a reliable guide to model number. Many devices come with an AX tag, but it is essentially a label that Netgear, and other brands, attach to hardware to describe wifi speeds.
Look at the label on the device for the model number. RAX something or other?
The step by step instructions wanted me to plugin the nighthawk ethernet to my modems ethernet, but I dont have a modem, I just have the wall ethernet for internet, so I plugged it directly into the wall. The router says there are no cables connected.
Routers are designed to work with modems or an optical equivalent.
If you just plug into the wall there's a good chance that you are plugging into another router. So you are piling router on router. That's a recipe for chaos.
The wall ethernet port provides internet to my laptop when directly plugged in, so I'm assuming there is a problem with this router, or I'm doing something wrong?
What makes you think that? The instructions say "plug into modem". You plugged into something else. Don't you think that could be the issue?
Have you asked the unknown ISP that supplies your Internet how you are supposed to connect a router to it?
Depending on how they deliver the Internet, you may have to put your new router into Access Point mode.
