RAX15 disappointing 2.4ghz performance

Recently purchased the RAX15 to replace my old n600 WNDR3700 and I am disappointed by the performance on the 2.4ghz band.

My broadband was upgraded to 300/300 in January. At 10 feet away from the RAX15, the 2.4ghz band is only giving me between 65-85Mbps while the 5ghz band gives me 250-280Mbps. In the rooms at the back of the house, the 2.4ghz band is so weak that I only get 5-10Mbps. Surprisingly, the 5ghz band gives 150 to 190Mbps. Doesn't the 2.4ghz band have more range than the 5ghz?

Were my expectations too high for the 2.4ghz band or did I receive a faulty router? I upgraded the firmware to the lates one offered on this site but there were no improvements.

  • 2.4ghz is significantly slower than 5ghz. Even in the new AX spec. Its gotten better than AC though.

And it still drops off with range.

it probably does reach further than 5ghz. The difference is though, is 5ghz is so much faster that even a half decent connection is still going to be faster over 5ghz. You almost have to be out of 5ghz's range to cross the point where 2.4ghz is going to be faster.

For instance, I have the RAX200 (and other AX devices I've tested). I can hit >1gig over 5ghz with my intel AX200 but barely hit a peak of 100mbps over 2.4ghz. And thats peak. my average is around 60-70mbps and that's at close range.

I haven't found any points in my home that 2.4ghz even gets close to 5ghz. Outside in my yard, my 5ghz isn't present at all but the 2.4ghz is and its usable.

this has been true of all the AX devices I've tested.
