RAX40 dropping signal
Anyone else experiencing signal loss randomly with latest firmware? ISP is good, router works fine after reboot, but it's almost daily and sometimes twice a day. Running Firmware V1.0.3.80_1....
- Jul 14, 2020I ended up swapping for an ASUS AX3000. This being the final straw, I have had multiple issues over the last year and change from SmartConnect not working at all to spontaneous reboots. I couldn’t go much more than a week without some sort of issue.

I am having the same issue. Do you know how to resolve this?

ngrover Also, it's weird to mark this as a solution. Getting a new router is not a solution. I would just recomment leaving this as not solved since... it's not solved. It needs more eyes that this is a problem.

100% agree - suggesting to buy a new router, when we purchased this router assuming it would be perfectly fine (as you would, purchasing something that costs as much as it did), is NOT a solution.
Netgear need to pull their fingers out of their arses and FIX THIS!
- ngroverSep 07, 2020GuideWhat is weird is that netgear won’t support their product. I think getting a new router is literally the ONLY solution. So I’ll keep it marked as solved, unless you have a valid solution suggestion? I keep getting replies so people are seeing this, and showing as solved will probably get more eyes since people are looking for a solution.
The issues everyone seem to be sharing are a widespread concern and it’s awful business acumen to leave paying customers high and dry. If this was some small device, I’d get it. But a ‘flagship’ WiFi 6 device?? Absolutely wild.- Goldenbrown21Sep 23, 2020Initiate
Hi all,
I've had this issue since purchasing the router in March (and this was with the 64 firmware). I was getting occasional dropouts but having massive connection flapping and BSD on my Surface Pro tablet. I thought it was the tablet and got it replaced by Microsoft, but it still has the same issues and will only work if it's connected via 5Ghz and located in a different room to the router (go figure?!).
Since working from home, I have noticed that I get regular dropouts on all of my devices, and then a complete shut-down of network due to "DOS attacks" (according to the log) that aren't actually DOS attacks.
Firmware changes haven't made any difference, and I've been through support with no luck and no solution.
I hope this gets looked into as it's not a cheap router (especially in Aus!). I'll look into the Asus that's been spruiked on this thread and maybe donate this hunk of junk to an electronical engineering student.
Netgear - shame on you.

I just want to let the rest of the people who are having problems with this router and Netgear Support, like I had, and what MAY have solved the problem. I sent this message below via the netgear support page to close the ticket since we have not had the problem rear its ugly head in 48 hours. It's just maybe the recent verson of the firmware that is the problem. I reverted the firmware back to Version 1.0.3.64 and so far, cross your fingers, it may have worked. I also went into the settings and diabled the AUTO Firmware update setting so I don't get the buggy formware back. Good Luck with trying to fix this and most importantly better luck with trying to something fixed with teir support. If you can call it that.
It has been 48 hours since the third support person had me revert the firmware on the RAX 40 router from Firmware Version 1.0.3.80 to Firmware Version 1.0.3.64 and we have not had any incidents of not being able to get on the network WITHOUT having to reboot the router. Therefore, I am hopeful that the ticket maybe closed. This time you can close the ticket with my approval and NOT like the two previous tickets were closed WITHOUT my approval even though you said they would stay open for 7 days. It looks increasingly likely that the new version of the firmware is the problem. The complamentry 90 day support ends on 8/21/20 and if the problem reoccurs after the support period ends, I am going to buy another companies router as fast as you can say "The dam Netgear Nighthawk router is down again and I had to reboot it for the millionth time".

reverting back to an older firmware shouldn't be deemed as a solution.. the solution should be that Netgear FIX the latest firmware that they released. It does not make sense to me how they could release the firmware, with release notes mentioning that WIFI crashes were fixed, when they in fact made them worse.. I have reverted back to the previous firmware as most people on the forum (as well as Netgear support) have recommended and yes, no more WIFI dropouts, but Netgear shouldn't pat themselves on the back for this "fix" as it's not fixing the problem. The problem is the new firmware which needs to be inspected, fixed, re-tested and re-released.
- RYWKAug 16, 2020InitiateI have same issue too and I found this is HomeKit issue , When I using AirPlay to HomePod , WiFi will dropping Signal . I back to 1.0.3.64_1.0.1, everything is fine !

Agreed. It is the best solution, that is the same I am doing.

It's been running about a week with no problems and the web portal and the app are so much more robust and visually superior. if only swapping for a different modem/router was a viable option for me.. the RAX40 is straight up garbage and netgear are taking ages to release a new firmware for it.

Is the accepted solution here seriously to buy an ASUS router?
My Iphone 6S Plus has been able to connect to my NightHawk RAX40 for the last year, and within a month of my year date it wont connect. I have tried factory reset of the router. Updated to the most recent firmware. Tried resetting all of my network settings on my phone. I am able to connect to other networks just fine, but for some reason something changed and I can no longer connect my phone. The weird thing is that my Iphone gets an IP assigned and the router considers it to be connected, butt he WI-FI icon on the phone does not display.
I have seen some other explanations that this may be related to the fact that my router is connected to my Xfinity/Comcast modem, but the only reason that does not seem to fit logically is because when I do connect and get an ip address assigned I cannot reach any local addresses from my phone still. Such as the router login page, etc.
Any ideas on what I need to fix to get this working again?

The only way I found to fix this problem is to roll back to the previous version of the routers firmware which I believe is the the 1.0.3.64 version. The1.03. 80 version which I and many others had installed was the problem. After I roll it back, the problems were solved. Don't forget to disable automatic update of the firmware in the settings of the router. I don't know why netgear has not done anything to fix the faulty 80 version, but it I don't think I would buy another netgear product. Also, I to have Xfinity modem/router that I use as a modem only because its in the basement and it would be difficult to move it upstairs in my house.

beta testers such as myself have provided our inputs to the engineering team on the latest beta firmware.. it's now in their hands to provide an updated public release
