RAX50 Router not pulling full internet speeds

This post is strictly about direct connect ethernet connections, I have no issues with my wifi. I have Frontier fiber at 500mbps/500mbps. My Frontier router can put out 500+ up and 500+ down when I am direct connected, however it's wifi coverage doesn't quite reach the opposite end of my house (irrelevant, but it's why I purchased the Nighthawk router). The Nighthawk router reaches my entire house and then some with wifi which is great, however when I am direct connected to the Nighthawk router, I can only pull between 220 and 270mbps download speed, it still pulls 500+ upload speed. I tried factory resetting, disabling Qos, but I cannot get it to pull more. Even when I do the routers built in speedtest, it shows ~425mbps down/up. I'm guessing there is some kind of setting that needs to be changed, however I do not know what. I even tried connecting my Frontier router up to my house line, and using the Nighthawk as just a 'wifi' hookup, but I could not get that to work at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

  • So I ended up solving the issue. When I originally hooked up the router, I went through the whole setup process and at some point, maybe during the end? of the process the app said it was updating the firmware to the current version. I assumed this had been done, and even when I factory reset the router when it "checked for firmware updates" it said it was updated to the current version.  All this being said and I assumed the firmware was up to date and that was not the issue. After searching and searching and turning things on/off, resetting/etc. Turns out it was in fact the firmware, however to update it to the current version I had to click on 'Setup Wizard' and go through that process. So if your in the same boat, try that and see if it helps. I am now pulling 500+ up and down speeds hardwired and 380/340 wifi. I know it sounds simple and you may think (yeah it says 'setup wizard' what did you think you were supposed to do) however the app walks you through setting the router up and it worked fine (aside from my hardwire speeds) so in theory you never have to even log into the routers settings so in my opinion it's easily missed.

    TL;DR

Log into your routers settings (usually 192.168.1.1 in your web address bar) and run the "Setup Wizard" option. It should update and reboot and be good to go.

  • Forgot to add, but in case anyone needs to know. My houseline is cat5e, but my Frontier router still puts out 500. The ethernet from my router to my pc is cat8 so my cables should not pose an issue at all.
