RAX70 No internet on 5GHz, only 2.4GHz

I just got a used RAX70 and have it connected to my existing network through a switch - I have the network cable plugged into the switch and then into port 1 of the LAN switch.  (I have a SonicWall set up as my main router and just wanted this for wifi.)

I can connect to the 2.4GHz wifi and I get internet without any problems.  However, if I connect a device to either of the 5GHz connections, I get no internet.  I tried a factory reset of the router and changed the SSIDs of all connections, and my device supports 5GHz (Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra).

Do I have to have the WAN port connected to get internet on 5GHz?  That seems odd, but I've never really cared about it before.  Or is the device just faulty?  I'm getting an IP on the 5GHz connections, so that much works, but beyond that I'm not getting anywhere.

Maybe I'm trying to use it for something it's not designed to do, but it's not the first router I've set up this way, so I thought I'd check.  It's possible I'm missing something simple - any ideas?

  • Netgear routers depend on having the WAN port connected to the internet. (no matter how many devices are in the path).  So yes, the WAN port needs to be connected.
