plemans it hasn't gone down, I'm just covering myself with an online solution in case the hardware(pi not router) got knocked/unplugged/broken or the software crashes/bugs/goes weird. what do you use? for my use case battery backup would be excessive.

I actually used a Raspberry Pi for a year or two and then switched to a Docker-based version of the Raspberry Pi. It worked really well but didn't
include the full details I wanted for my system, so I ended up buying a cheap mini-PC and running an OPNsense router on it with Unbound (basically the same as a
Raspberry Pi with recursive DNS). It's worked well and helped with the stability of my network.
But I do use a backup power supply that includes the modem and router. Nothing expensive because our power doesn't go out for long. I think it's a cheap APC, $60-80, and it's worked great. Highly recommend it when you run your own DNS or have DNS filtering.
