Solved: as a last resort I did a factory reset. Back to normal speeds, just a pain to have to put everything back in.

  Now is a good time to make a backup configuration file. It makes it easier to restore the configuration if you find yourself in the same situation in the future. Just remember, the backup configuration file is only good for the firmware version that was installed when you created the file. If you update firmware in the future, the first action is to make a backup configuration file based on the new firmware.

    It's complicated. There are mixed views, and experiences, of this.
    
    Installing new firmware should not mess around with the settings, so you won't need to restore anything from a saved backup. In those circumstances, definitely worth creating a new backup.
    
    But if an update breaks something, "reset and restore" can help.
    
    If things then work as expected, I'd still create a new backup with the new firmware.
    
    One thing to avoid is restoring settings that already had problems before the update. That can just revive the problem.
    
    The bottom line is that too few people maintain a backup of their working configuration.
