What firmware version are you on?
The traffic meter did impact performance on the older R series of routers but the RAX200 has a pretty rock solid process that should have the ability to manage the traffic meter

but with it disabled, speeds are fine?
I'd probably just leave it disabled. I haven't found it that useful as the data usage never matches what my isp reports.The meter does seem to have problems differentiating between network and Internet traffic.
