Most of the people who comment on the Forum seem to prefer the web administration approach over a smartphone 'app'. Be aware that Netgear does not make it easy to avoid using the app. There is often an almost invisible option along the lines of, "I do not have a smartphone." There are some features and options which cannot be managed with the app. (There are also features that can be managed ONLY using the app.)
Since you have to do a complete setup, it is often helpful to go through the web interface on the existing router and make a screen shot of every page. Save them to a Word or PDF file so that you can refer to the information if needed.
With so many people these days not owning computers, it is obvious that a huge number of Netgear customers configure their new WiFi router using the smartphone app and seem to suffer no ill effects. (From the WiFi systems visible in my neighborhood, it is also obvious that a significant number of customers do not configure their WiFi systems at all.
