Yes, this makes absolutely no sense. When both a smartphone and a laptop experience the same behavior, "something is wrong".

WiFi5 (802.11ac) repeaters are widely available for under $30. Name brand WiFi6 (802.11ax) are typically a bit more expensive, coming close to the cost of basic WiFi6 routers.
There is one WiFi6 repeater on Amazon for $19.99 USD that gets decent reviews. Less than a meal out for two or a "top shelf" bottle of wine. If it doesn't help, Amazon has a decent return policy or you might find someplace else in the house that could benefit from it.
