Re-register router and set up parental controls
I moved to a new (new to me*) house. The previous owner left a Nighthawk x6 R8000 router. I am unable to register as the previous owner already had done so. I am unsure if I need to register. Please advise.
I also need to know how to enable parental controls. When I click on the link (through a brower [Genie] ad through the nighthawk app.)it takes me to a page explaining the benefits of PC but no instructions how to enable. Please assist!

The first thing to do with a second hand router is to reset it to remove any configuration settings from the previous owner.

On registration, it depends on what the previous owner had done with the R8000. There are different flavours of registration.

As that says,
...your device will work even if you do not register, but you will not be able to open a support ticket with our technical support team unless you register. If you have not registered, you can still download firmware updates and manuals, and search the technical knowledge base, on the NETGEAR support website: https://www.netgear.com/support/.
With somewhat ageing second hand router , you won't gain anything by registering.
But if the previous owner "registered" it for anything that used Netgear's cloud stuff, like Anywhere Access, you may have to get customer service to change the settings.
Best move might be to wait until you hit something that you can't use and then get help.

You may have an old router that supported the original free version of Parental Controls. They killed that a year or so back.
You now need a paid subscription to get parental controls.
