VPN and Parental Controls

My sons  computer, tablet and phone show no usage or browsing history when I access parental controls. I susppect he is using a VPN or some other work around. I thought with a VPN I would still see the amount of time online, even if not the sites visited. His devices show "0" and none. Any thoughts?
