First, I would suggest for you to have a backup of all the important data.
Regarding your question, if the chassis fails you can transfer the drives onto a new chassis since the OS of the NAS is saved on the drives (just insert it on the new chassis the same order as you have it on the old one) so you'll need to get the same hardware. I have heard as well that data on the drives on the NV+ (in case of failure of chassis) can be transferred to newer x86 units through SSH/TelNet access (this is a paid service though, which considers a lot of things).
