Does power saving mode disable all networking?

I'm currently trying ZyXEL Powerline AV 500 products which are based on exactly the same Atheros chipset at the Netgear XAV5001, and when the ZyXELs go into power saving mode, they cut off networking completely! Thus another power line unit on the network loses the connection with it, but more importantly, for MacOS X computers anyway, you cannot "see" the computer connected to the power saving unit for file or screen sharing, which is a significant drawback. Even when Mac OS X devices sleep, they still maintain some degree of connectivity and can be woken up.

So my question is this: does power saving mode on the Netgear XAV500x products work the same way (I imagine it does), and if so, can it be disabled? This is a deal breaker for me.

  • By the way, the Netgear and ZyXEL products are so similar that the Netgear utility for Mac works with the ZyXEL adapters (for which there is only a Windows utility)
  • hi power save mode activates about 10 min after there is no link in the ethernet adapter, and resumes when the link is back on, or reconnect the adapter to the power outlet.

so it is all the way around first the ethernet network is off, the the power safe mode operates...
