Firmware update for XAV5001/5004 to increase throughput

Many of the other devices that use the Atheros AR1500/AR7400 chipset are reporting a lot better throughput performance compared to Netgear's XAV50001 & 50004 (firmware v0.2.0.9NA). Most indicate a 50% improvement over the Netgear devices.

Does anyone know if Netgear is working with Atheros to update their firmware to improve the throughput to be comparable to other competing models?

I have been extremely pleased with my XAV5001/5004 Kit, as it improved the throughput to my Home Theater system compared to wireless 'n'. However, it would be nice to see Netgear continue to improve the performance to be inline with the competing devices.

  • Just out of curiosity, what speeds are you getting??

I've just set up my kit last night and have been a little underwhelmed. I've tested about 4 locations around my house and have received mixed results. Unfortunately, the worst location seems to be my lounge where all my AV gear is set up. The best I've managed in this location using the Netgear Powerline Utility is about 60Mbps and that's with all the AV gear off! With all the gear turned on that drops to about 40Mbps. This is considerably lower than the screenshots in the SmallNetBuilder review seen here:

Testing an actual real world file transfer using Network Meter produced 30Mbps with all gear off, and 20Mbps with all gear on.

The best other location produced 160Mbps using the Netgear utility and 75Mbps with Network Meter.

    Anyone got any theories?
  • I believe that the DLink and Belkin adapters all use Atheros chips and they are quite a bit faster than Netgear. I would love to see a new firmware to speed up the Netgear adapter.

Testing on SmallNetBuilder by forum member rhombus concludes differently. His review is in the forum section. Web master thiggins had his own review(s) of these plugs, though he looked only at singular point tests and not longer term averaging tests done by rhombus. Both are good reading.

From powerline, I get ~56Mbps upload and ~68Mbps download (using robocopy). Same location with wifi 'n' was ~25Mbps up and ~33Mbps download.

Numbers reported by the Netgear powerline utility indicate ~120Mbps. These are Marketing numbers. The Marketing depts of Electronics companies have no shame and they have no value in 'truth in advertising'. Their education is based on out right lying.
