Netgear, and most brands, don't sell singletons, only bundles.
Some makers do sell single plugs. In theory you can mix brands but it isn't always easy to get set them up.
Most recent Powerline devices follow the AV standard, which means that you can mix different makes and different generations. The only issue if that if you add "1000" plugs to a network with "500" plugs, or vice versa, they will talk to each other at the speed of the slowest plugs on the network.

If I purchase the PLW kit, am I required to use both pieces to get the WiFi end to function OR will it connect to my PLP2000 device(s)?
You need only one "source" plug connected to the router.
When adding new plugs to an existing network, you need to follow this advice:
>>> Adding a powerline adapter to an existing powerline network <<<
You might find it easier to use a plain Powerline plug as the wired source for a standalone wireless access point. I have a Powerline feed to an Orbi router in AP mode.
It may be some time before the image lands. To ensure that you aren't posting anything naughty, a Netgear moderator has to approve the pictures.
You can attach images to messages without any delay.

These have Gbps LAN ports, which is about the only spec that I pay attention to. I do like pass through plugs though. Take up less space.
