Short answer: YES.
I have a pair of XAV101. I installed an XAVB5004 at one end of the link and it worked with the XAV101 at the other.
I now have the 5004 and 5001 in circuit.
Have not tried this with the two 101's also in circuit but other sites indicate this works, albeit at a reduced speed.

PS Throughput varies a lot on the 5xxx series. What are people using to test speed?
