So then (for instance) on the downstairs powerline, I could plug the router and also a separate device into it? I only ask because i'm running out of available ethernet ports on my router. I would assume yes but I'm just double checking ..

In regards to the running out of ports, you can snag a cheap 8 port gigabit switch for $15-20 usually
