PLP2000-100PAS issues

Hey everyone, I own a Netgear R7000 hooked up to my ISP's modem. I have a family of four, each of us with a few devices, and we pay for 400 mbps. Usually the wifi is strong throughout the house with my nighthawk. However, I moved back in to work from home because of the pandemic and since so many people are online now, internet speeds vary greatly just based on time of day. So I purchased a powerline system (PLP2000-100PAS) to get more consistent internet and avoid spikes.

 

Obviously I would have preferred to set up an ethernet cable directly into my nighthawk but based on its location and the location of the room where I work, it wasn't feasible; so for convenience I purchased the powerline adapter. The signal degradation is insane. On a good day I can get 30-40 mbps on a speed test, but the powerline adapter will constantly drop connection and reconnect every few seconds. Looking at the unit, it happens when the "Pick a plug" light turns off; as I mentioned this happens at very frequent intervals with seemingly no explanation. It's connected directly into my outlets, with an ethernet into the router for the internet connection and an ethernet into my work laptop in the other room.

 

This is exceptionally frustrating when I have to complete work, or when I game for leisure. Nothing I do fixes it, I've tried unplugging several times and resetting it to factory default to no avail.

    That's because the problem usually isn't firmware or "unplugging and plugging back in" .

    Its usually related to the interference in the home. Not all homes run powerline devices well. it could be because of the wiring or it could be because of certain devices injecting interference into the powerline system.

    Things that can impact powerline devicess:

    GFCI outlets

    Surger protectors

    Arc fault breakers

    high draw appliances

    poorly made electronics 

    cell phone chargers

    electronics going bad

    old wiring or poorly ran/installed wiring

    And more

     

    An easy check for powerline? 

    plug both devices in on the same circuit (breaker). See how well it functions on the same circuit. If it works fine and theres only an issue when you're seperating them out, then something in the home is causing interference. Keep in mind this isn't a 100% test because something could be causing so much issues that even on the same circuit there's issues but its an easy check. 

     

    Again, not all home works well with powerline. Some can be helped by checking what devices are plugged in and causing interference. Basically you unplug whatever you can and see how they work. If they work fine, then you start plugging stuff back in. 

    My house sticks for powerline because of all the arc fault breakers and where they put the power box. Basically it only works on the same circuit in my home. And its only 15 years old.
