The performance of Powerline plugs depends greatly on the electrical environment. Anything that causes "noise" can disrupt traffic. Phone chargers, DECT phones, crummy mains wiring, anything.
It sounds like you have had this connectivity problem for some time. Have you tried different mains sockets?
The colour of the "pick a plug" LED is less important than the connection itself. You can get a good connection even with a red LED.
