Unfortunately, I live with roommates and the circuit this is on also seems to control 4 other rooms as well, so I really have no control over how much noise is added.
I now realize that these devices have their uses, but are certainly not dependable when using in a household. Back to the drawing board.

They certainly have limitations. But it is more likely the nature of the household that matters. Room mates with noisy kit, and maybe a lot of it, are certainly a recipe for trouble, especially if they share the Internet connection.
