Yes.
Not quite the same thing, but I have used Powerline as the wired connection to an Orbi router in AP mode.

Thanks, confirming this worked! The speed of the internet connection using the Powerline connection as the backhaul, is about the same as the wireless backhaul when it actually connects, but I'm hoping it will be a more stable connection. I consistently get ~600 MB/s download at the router, but only ~50-60 MB/s at the Powerline extender. Not sure if that's typical or not.

A lot depends on the local mains network.
As you say, Powerline should be more reliable.
