Netgear does not sell single plugs, WiFi or plain Powerline.
Some brands do sell single plugs, including plugs with WiFi access points (AP).
Most recent Powerline devices follow the AV standard, which means that you can mix different makes and different makes and generations.
The only issue if that if you add "1000" plugs to a network with "500" plugs they will talk to each other at the speed of the slowest plugs on the network.
When you do add plugs to an existing network, you should follow these instructions:
Powerline Networking | Powerline Ethernet | NETGEAR
Remember, you need only one "source" plug connected to the router.
In theory you can mix brands but it isn't always easy to set them up.
Another option is to use Powerline ethernet to feed a LAN connection to any WiFi access point/extender that takes you fancy. They don't have to be Powerline devices.

As an update. I found a Netgear PLW1000v2 on ebay. It arrived today. I plugged it into an AC socket and it worked fine connecting to my AV200. Granted the speeds aren't stellar but neither is my network provider. And another interesting point is that in the instructions for the PowerLINE WiFi 1000 set say that you can use up to eight extra units. But you can't buy separate units. Except, it seems, on ebay.

Some people have hit a wall when they connect a sixth plug.
