XAV5201 - Powerline 500 Adapter showing as Unidentified Network
i have a XAV5201v2 unit. it connects to my ipad with cable and works fine. Switching to Surface laptop and I get no Ethernet connection. It just says Unidentified Network.
Connecting the laptop directly to the modem with same cable - works fine. So the only variable is when the laptop and the XAV5201v2 are trying to connect. It doesn't work with a USB connector* or with the Surface Adapter block. (*) the connector worked at the modem.
The only variable is the connection from XAV to laptop. There must be a buried setting in the laptop to not assign a DHCP IP Address - even setting the IP address does not work. Assuming I did that correct.
I pulled it from ipconfig and checked it on the web.
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 97.120.202.60(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Any help appreciated.

Powerline plugs don't mess around with IP addresses. In theory they are just wired connections to the router, much like a switch.
You may be on the right track with the laptop. Windows can be very picky when you throw it at a "new" network. Have you tried its network troubleshooter?
Windows likes to protect us from new networks that might be evil. In reality, it often shuts us out of safe networks.
One thought is that you could tell Windows that you are on a "private network".
- Network and Internet settings
- Network Status
- Change Connection Properties
- Network Profile
- Private
I'm told that this is rubbish advice. But it has worked for me and others in the same boat.
