A week later now, and I can reply to my own post. The problem turned out clearly not to lie in the XAVP1000 powerline power supply. Following some eBay searches, I bought a Cisco PLE300, thinking (foolishly) it would be a replacement for the XAVP1000. When it arrived, I eventually figured out it is a host adapter instead. I swapped out the ZyXEL PLA401, plugged in the XAVP1000 to the network again, and I once again had a live powerline system. So it was the ZyXEL adapter that had failed (I suppose just as my ZyXEL power line modem/router had failed a year or so ago).
