Without realising there had to be compatibility, I bought 2 x XAV101v2 Powerline adaptors to go with my XE104s.
They are not communicating..... can they ?

No, they are not compatible. While a HomePlug AV powerline network can exist in the same household as a HomePlug 1.0 powerline network, they cannot communicate with each other.
