This is for the future users who may have similar issues with a dual mode Wifi NIC such as the A7000. There are a number of points of error that can found and need to be worked through. 1) There are issues regarding whether it is defined as a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 device. The default setting is 'Auto' this allows the adapter to change to suit environment. In 'Advanced' Properties page you can switch to USB1,2,3 modes manually. You can also define what frequency and modality within the 'Advanced' page. VHT is for 802.11ac enabled devices and typically 2.4 rather than 5GHz... "Very High Throughput" mode. Conversely there is "HT" which is "High Throughput" that is for USB 2.0 2.4GHz and 802.11a/g/n. Make sure that you write down what changes you make to the properties of wireless device so you can reverse it and bear in mind the limitations.. Make sure you dont cross cancel them out. 2) Windows Desktops and Laptops I have had lost connection as the adapter goes into a power saving mode and selectively shuts down connected devices. This can be fixed in by disallowing power-saving and allowing the system to make such decisions. There may be motherboard and chipset set instructions or microcode updates to fix.
Thanks. I made note of all of that because I had no idea what some of those things meant so I appreciate you taking the time to explain. To be honest I just bought a USB extension so it gives me an extra 4 usb ports and plugged the adapter into one of those. Maybe my USB ports were just going bad. It still disconnects sometimes but its rare now. This should work for awhile until I replace the whole thing with something better.

These don't always play nicely with things like wifi adapters. It can depend on the drivers for the USB extension.
Ultimately, it will all be down to the drivers for the adapter itself.
