Netgear makes no claim that the A8000 supports Macs. In general it has a hard time keeping up with Apple's every changing OS environment. So it seems to have abandoned Macs in newer adapters.
None of these USB devices claims to support Linux. People turn up here from time time to with that question, but I have yet to see any reference to a successful Linux installation.
Windows usually accepts these USB adapters, but it can fall over for various reasons.
Did you download the latest software for the A8000?
A8000 Software Version 1.0.0.125 (Windows) - NETGEAR Support
It actually claims to be the initial release, but worth trying if you don't have it.
There can also be driver issues at the chipset level in Windows.
You say you have two adapters. Does the other one work? Could it conflict with the new one? Have you tried removing all of these devices? When you do that, look for "Hidden Devices" in Device Manager.
